  • I HAD To Wait....

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

I am sorry I am posting this late for those of you that read it late at night...but I really had to wait until the Beast and I had finished our first donut project (together).  For this he had to go out and buy a new deep fryer, a beater on a stand complete with dough hooks, his special peanut oil and a few other things that he felt we should have fresh.  Fresh flour.  Fresh unsalted butter.  Don't ask me where he gets those notions.  He's a man.  I am a woman.  Never the twain shall understand the other.  Actually, it's more that MEN feel they are bakers or chefs when THEY decide to make something.  We learn to keep our mouths shut because they don't believe a word we say until they have a disaster on their hands (or near disaster).  Some men actually CAN cook and bake, but they are far and few between in their ratio in the world.  We women feed families each and every day but...well, we get little credit for it.

Anyway, after he CAREFULLY measured, heated up the milk and dissolved the yeast (I was relegated to reading instructions), then put it all together EXACTLY as the recipe stated, then it was time to put it all in the fridge for an hour and wait.  Then the roll out, cutting out the donuts, putting them on a floured dishtowel (I kid you not!) and wait for them to double in size.  He then deep fried them to the perfect golden color and after they cooled slightly, he used powdered sugar on them.

Now, I admit they taste great.  However, the instructions say to roll the dough out to half an inch thickness.  Thankfully, he didn't do that because he knew they had to rise.  Besides, his REAL reason was he didn't think he would get enough donuts out of the dough if he did that.  So, he ends up with 8 donuts (exactly what the recipe said...well, it said 8-14 so they know we women are much better at this stuff...LOL) and 8 donut holes.  He lets them rise until doubled in size (remember, they were not a half inch thick but they weren't thin either).  Then he throws them in to deep fry and OMG....they get HUGE!

The Beast looks at me and says, *I think next time, if we make these, we can roll the dough out a lot thinner!*  Talk about an understatement.

At least they are tasty.  When Chewlee comes tomorrow, she will love eating one all by herself!  Everything becomes a project when it involves something HE wants to do.  It gives me a headache whenever he comes up with something like this.  Me?  Well, if you are a woman, I would have just DONE it.  Not a big amount of fanfare and I would have done it with what I have on hand, not gone out and bought a mixer that I won't use much in the future (HE might) or a new deep fryer.  We had one here already but he forgot about that.  He never thought to ask me.  It might have taken me a bit to remember where it was but I knew we had one.

Well, at least there were no disasters.  That alone is encouraging but I knew these were not the donuts he really wanted to make.  Oh, and get this.  He says to me, *I wanted the donuts to be GREASIER than they turned out to be.*  He was disappointed, can you believe it?  HE is the one that should need his arteries cleaned out.  Hell, maybe he does but we just don't know it yet.  He's the one that loves anything and everything greasy.  Not me but that's neither here nor there.  He made the donuts and they are edible.  More than edible.  They are good...tasty.

Love you all.  Have a great Sunday.  I'm going to sleep in since the Beast kept us up this late and then we had clean up to do.  I'm beat.  Enjoy your day.

  • If he uses the same oil for the next batch, the donuts will get greasier.  As oil gets used it breaks down a bit and tends to permeate the food it is cooking.

  • Thanks for the info.  I did notice that his last batch of donuts seemed to have a difference in the amount of grease.  They also stayed softer overnight than the first donuts.  Guess we have the grease to thank for that.  I'm not a sweet eater...have never been since I was a teenager except for soft serve ice cream.  **Blush**  HE is happy tho'.  Hugs.
