TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM
I got a bit of a shock this morning when we left for the hospital. I thought it was a bit early (we left an hour before we were told to be there) for a hospital that was slightly over 5 miles away. Turns out the Beast forgot to mention the surgery was taking place at the hospital in Gadsden.
I know! It certainly changed my day, that's for sure. I was on the road more than I had figured on.
After getting the Beast into his gown (and naked underneath
), I made sure the nurses had my cell phone number since I had to come back to the house to see to the dog's needs. He hadn't gone out to pee before we left (that dog has kidneys made of steel, I swear) and he was going to be very hungry. I picked up some hot wings at KFC on the way home along with their potato wedges and he shared the wedges with me. He really loves those. Must be something about the seasoning. I took the time to make up our bed before I had to turn around and head back to the hospital. I wanted to be there when he came out of surgery. He was just getting out when I got there so I didn't have a long wait before they brought him down to the discharge area. I was a bit annoyed that the doctor didn't come down to talk to me about it all but I guess there was good reason besides him being behind in his schedule, as I will relate to you shortly.
When the nurse came into the surgical waiting area for me, he was just being settled in and they were checking his oxygen levels, blood pressure, etc. since it has to be in a certain range before they can release him. They ended up having to put the oxygen meter/detector/whateverthehellitscalled on his ear because his levels showed so low using his fingers that he should have been blue. On his earlobe, however, it came all the way up to 99 so he was good to go once he relaxed a bit.
The nurse from surgery told me that the Beast was combative when he started coming out of the anesthesia. I gather that's not unusual but.....he kept saying he had to pee and trying to get off the gurney and it took four nurses to wrestle him into the bed. I know what he had on his mind. When he had this type of surgery last, they wouldn't release him until he pee'd. When he couldn't, they catheterized him and he suffered with it for 8 days before it was finally removed. He had in mind that if he pee'd this time, there wouldn't be a catheter to deal with. Little did he know.
However, the good news is....there is no catheter and no need for one. He says the way they put him under was different this time (they used a mask) and once it was on his face, he remembers nothing else until he woke up in recovery. He says there is a lot more pain, however. I just shook my head and said, *Of course there is! They took half your prostate. Do you know what that is even?* He claims he does but I have my doubts. He may know what it controls but I don't think he could actually pick it out or tell you where it's located, in truth. But he was beginning to get on my nerves with his complaints about it being more painful over and over again. All lI could think of was....oh good grief! If he's this bad now, what in the hell is it going to be like when the pain medication starts to wear off?
When I got him home (I will NOT tell you about the awful drive home...30 miles of torture), I made sure he was settled and then headed for Walmart to get his prescriptions filled. The girl told me 45 minutes so I did a bit of shopping then headed back only to find out they didn't have the pain medication so they didn't fill either. They intended to give me the scrip so I could take it somewhere else since I was not going to wait until Friday for his pain meds.
This one girl gives me a weak, *Oh, didn't we page you? I was sure.....* I was really pissed off and, after paying for the few things I had picked up, went up to Walgreens which not only HAD the meds but only took about 5 minutes to fill it when I had told them I had to wait for it because the Beast had just gotten home from the hospital after having surgery a few hours ago.
They gave filling it priority, which I thought was great. Not only that, but I swear, the price I paid for the scrips was cheaper than at Walmart.
I've gotten both of them before and this was even without having the Beast's insurance cards on me. I told them that I didn't care....I just needed the meds because he had been home for over an hour and he was probably needing the pain medication about then.
He's been fed, hot chocolate-d, medicated and is ready to go to bed now. I can de-stress and de-compress once that is done. At least he is happy that there is no catheter. I thank everyone for their prayers in that regard. I know it had to have made a difference.
Love you all and take care driving if you are getting that storm front moving from the Midwest. We will be getting it on Weds. and Thurs. Guess it's slow moving and more dangerous. We have enough food, fresh bread and milk so that I won't have to go out in it except maybe to pick up Chewlee. I'll have to watch the weather closely and pick her up during a break in the storm if possible. Again, thank you all for your prayers.
