  • So I Am Just Relaxing In My Recliner.....

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

...okay, so I was napping.  That chair is just too comfortable.  But, I slowly wake up because there is this wonderful aroma in the air.  My window is open because it's 73 outside.  The day started out kind of dark and icky looking but that passed and we had sunshine en masse.  Not a cloud in the sky to interfere.  It inspired the Beast to barbecue.  He lit it up and threw on some short ribs.  That was what woke me up.  I got up and headed for the kitchen area and the Beast was just bringing them in. They looked as good as they smelled.  I grabbed a section and then threw a potato in the microwave to cook up for myself.  The Beast declined one because he probably was just planning on pigging out on ribs.  I even sliced up a small tomato for myself and left part of it for the Beast.  Which he ate, BTW.

The day was just gorgeous and the ribs were wonderful.  Tender and tasty with just the right amount of barbecue sauce.  I didn't end up getting Chewlee at all but it was a great day to take her to the park so perhaps that is where she went.  She loves going there.  What kid wouldn't?

The Beast called me outside a while after we had finished eating to point out that one of our trees was in full bloom.    I know!  It shocked me, too, because it was not in bloom nor did it look that close yesterday.  But, there it was....beautiful white blooms on it.  Not just one or two but dozens.  It's one of the small Granny Smith apple trees.  The Beast was fertilizing today since we are expecting some heavy rain tonight and tomorrow so it will soak into the ground well.  He practically had to bump into the tree since he was looking at the ground while sprinkling the fertilizer around.

Yesterday, he did FINALLY manage to finish spraying the trees.  He even got the ground and trees sprayed for fungus one more time so keep your fingers crossed for us.  It figures the Granny Smith would bloom when they are talking about high winds tonight and tomorrow.  If those blooms haven't been fertilized already, that tree could end up being fruitless.

The Beast made me crazy working on repairing or at least trying to repair his sprayer.  He went online and tried to find some way to order the part that cracked on him but it just wasn't available.  He was totally pissed and then determined to find a way to make it work.  It took several trips to Lowe's but he finally managed to come up with something (I didn't even ask....I just knew when he was finally happy by the expression on his face and the *Ah ha!!!* that he damn near yelled) to make it work for him.  At least the jobs he wanted to do got done.  I just kept Chewlee away from him while he was working on it.

Yesterday, there came a point when Chewlee looked around my room (it was just littered with her stuff) and she said to me, *Gramma,  you have to clean up your room.  It's a mess!*  She then came over, before I could say a word, looked up at my face with this intense look and said, *I am going to talk to Papa and I want it clean when I get back.  Or else you go to a time out (and she points behind her at the door of the guest room)...in there.  You understand?*  As much as I wanted to laugh, I told her, *Chewlee, this mess is YOUR mess.  YOU will put all your toys back in the toy box in the guest room and I will clean up the rest.*

She looks around and gets this pained expression on her face and says, *But, Gramma, it's too much for me.  Will you help?*  I told her I would do the big toys (there were only two or three of those) but she had to do the rest.  She said OK and we cleaned it up.  I DID also fold the blankets and the towels (don't ask!) but...she offered to put the towels away for me, which she did.  She then looked around and told me to finish cleaning my room while she went to talk to Papa or else it was time out for me.  She made me wonder if she was really trying to tell me that she was tired and needed a rest.  She had taken a nap before coming here but...I have found that when she takes a nap, she seems to need to go to bed at an earlier time than when she doesn't.  Strange.

I had a weird incident happen to me late last night.  Bratfink and I were talking on an IM and, suddenly, off a short distance away (no more than a couple city block lengths) I heard 3 gunshots.  A short pause and then 4 or 5 rapid shots.  Not exactly a drunken redneck having fun by shooting his gun in the air.  Too late for squirrel hunting and it wasn't someone hunting deer.  The first couple shots and, if it wasn't hit, it would have been long gone.  It was really scary.  I got up to check and make sure Baron was in the house (Bratfink told me she really didn't think it was Baron shooting, though).  Her comment at least made me laugh.  The Beast forgot to pick up a paper so I will have to check out online to see on Wednesday when our local paper comes out if there was some kind of disturbance on Saturday night that was reported.  It would just have been a footnote in any of the bigger papers but would be a feature in our local paper.  It's not a big town.

Bratfink got some kind of a virus on her computer.  She ran about four different programs on it but none of them found it.  She was reduced to using the awful computer that the Boy was using when he lost Voltron and she says now she understands why he was so frustrated.  It was frustrating her, too, because she couldn't get to any of her sites, including Pogo.  The Boy says he's not taking her computer to his old computer guy because he's just too slow.  He wants her to get her's back faster so.....if you are one of the chosen ones that usually talks to her online, she will probably be either reading on her Kindle or trying to get used to her Ipad.  At least until her computer gets home from the hospital.  Say a little prayer that it won't take long.

Love you all and I hope you had a great weekend so you will be a happy person all week long.  Smile!  Spring is not far away.

  • Chewlee Shows Her *Terrible* Side.....LOL

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

Chewlee didn't get here as early as expected so I called the Princess.  She wasn't working a double today so she wasn't going to drop her off until around 3pm.  It was a bit later and all I could think of was that Chewlee had been told she would see me in the morning.  Instead, she didn't get here until after her nap.  She had to feel she was being lied to OR she would worry about what *I* would do without her here.

When she did get here, she was sullen and unhappy looking.  I knew I was in for trouble. Of course, the last thing the Princess said to me as she left was not to let Chewlee have a lot of snacks.  **Insert eyeroll here** Yeah, right!!  I DO make her eat some good food before I let her start snacking.  She didn't want chili mac today.  She told me she wanted salami but no bread and some chocolate milk.  She also had some apple slices and some buttered crackers that she saw I was eating with my chili mac.  After she ate about seven or eight slices of salami, and the other stuff, she then wanted a popsicle (which I had told her about to get a smile on her face before we ate).  It worked and she got two popsicles.  Later on, she snacked on the last of the grapes we had in the crisper that were good.  I picked off a few that were in really bad shape.  I offered her another popsicle but she declined.  She just wanted some more chocolate milk.  I go light on the chocolate, just so you know.  It has the taste without all the *side* effects.

The Princess told me that Johnnycakes was going out after work so she would probably have to pick up Chewlee when she got off (I suspect that will be late).  No matter.  Chewlee will sleep if she is tired.  We did pick out where the garden is going to be.  It will be alongside the walk that comes up to the stairs out front.  It will be around 8 ft. long by about 3 feet wide.  The Beast said it's going to take a lot of soil but I really don't care.  Compared to his guns, it will be cheap.  I don't think Johnnycakes works tomorrow so, even if the Princess does, I won't be getting Chewlee......I think.  Some days Chewlee is just too much for him so he might make a mercy call to me to take her for a while.  I will just have to wait and see how he manages.

Chewlee decided on something today.  She told me, *You stay here, Gramma, I have to do something but I will be back.*  She closes the door of the room and I hear some noises in the bathroom so I was thinking she was going potty.  But then, I hear her come out of the bathroom and wolk towards the living room.  I open the door and sneak into the little hallway and I see Chewlee with her little plastic step stool.  She puts it down next to Baron and the Beast, who is watching her, asks her what she's doing.  She turns around, looks at him and says, *I'm going to ride Baron.*  I just cracked up.  She was dead serious and the Beast laughs and tells her, *Oh no, you aren't.  Baron won't put up with that.*  Chewlee was not discouraged until Baron moved away from her and she had to get down, pick it up and move next to him again.  This went on for a few times before Chewlee says, *I guess I have to wait.  Baron doesn't want to right now.*  When she saw me watching her, I told her to put the step stool back where it belongs and she says, *No!  It's for when I ride Baron.*  But I made her put it back and told her that I thought she might just be a little too heavy for him to ride around because you aren't supposed to ride dogs.  She just gave me a look that told me this is not over yet.

I did have to punish her once today.  She wanted to get the broom and dustpan so she could *sweep*.  She manages to cause more damage than she could possibly find to sweep up.  It was after dinner and the Beast was in his recliner, relaxing and watching TV.  He had a lot of things on his tray next to him so I told Chewlee *no*, she couldn't use the broom because it was late at night and it was time to relax.  After being in the room for a few minutes, she left and told me she would be right back.  After three or four minutes, I heard this familiar clunking sound so I went out into the living room and, sure enough, she had the broom and dustpan.  When she saw me, she started out telling me she HAD to sweep the floor.  I told her that I had already told her she couldn't have it but then she yelled out, in a panic, *Papa gave it to me.  Papa gave it to me!*

Of course, I asked the Beast if he had and he said no, she had just gone and gotten it.  That is when I grabbed it, took it and put it away, smacked her bottom for lying and put her in the guest room for a time out.  Of course, she was crying....loudly....and it went on for several minutes.  When it got too quiet, I went to check on her and she had the door wide open.  I told her it had to stay closed until *I* said it was time and shut the door once again.  About five minutes or so later, the crying starts again and I go to see why.  She's sitting on the floor with her laptop computer toy and she's really upset.  She looks up at me and says, *It won't work!!  It needs new batteries!*

She was happy as a lark after I put new batteries in it and it was working once more.  I let her stay out after she started telling me, over and over, *I am so sorry, Gramma*  I told her she didn't get a time out for taking the broom but for lying to me.  I asked her if she understood and she shook her head yes.  I also told her if she did it again, the time out would be with lights out and for much longer.  She again kept saying, *I'm so sorry...I'm so sorry.  I won't do it any more, Gramma.*  If you could see how expressive her face and eyes are when she is saying things like this, you would call her Drama Queen like the Beast (and I) do.  She should be an actress.

Time to go.  Chewlee wants me to play with her and tie her up (oh....I could be sooooooooooo tempted at times with that  ).  I'll tell you tomorrow about the foibles of the Beast and his sprayer (still) tomorrow.  The Princess got off early tonight so she came to pick up Chewlee.

Love you all and have a great Sunday.  The Beast and I will be doing BBQ ribs tomorrow.  Yum!  Of course, it will be warm enough to use the bbq but we will eat inside.  It might be fairly nice weather but it's by no means WARM.

  • Chewlee Gets A Big Surprise!

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

I got a call from the Princess early in the day for a favor.  Johnnycakes was supposed to pick up Chewlee from school today but he wanted to go out with a couple friends from work instead so could I pick up Chewlee?  Oh yeah, like that's not a no-brainer.

Since today is bubble gum day, so-to-speak, she would really be looking forward to that.  But my picking her up...again on a Friday.....would be a real treat.  I agreed and was looking forward to seeing her reaction again.  The Princess told me that her teacher had called her to tell her that Chewlee was going to take a nap and she insisted that her mommy was told this.  She said, *You tell Mommy that I took a nap so I can go to Gramma's house.  Okay???*  She was so intense that her teacher had to laugh and she called the Princess to share that.  The Princess and Chewlee's teacher are friends so it wasn't really unusual for her to either call or text her.

When I picked her up, she was so excited that the other kids got excited, too.  One cute little boy went and got Chewlee's jacket for her and gave it to me.  I thanked him and told him how sweet that was.  Chewlee told me that his name was..xxxxxx, and NOT sweetie.  THAT made ME laugh.  She couldn't wait to go get her gum and dashed down the hallway to the foyer to get her gum.  She was a little stunned to find out that it was ALL gum in there.  The woman that is in the front office said they found that ALL the kids loved having gum so they decided that once a month they would just have all gum in it for them.  I found out after I got Chewlee back to the car that she had grabbed up THREE gums.  She has this *thing* about THREE of everything.  If she gets salami, it must be three slices.  I have learned to cut her cheese into three slices.  I have no idea where she gets THAT from but it's such a little thing, really.  I did tell her that taking three was a piggy thing to do and what if someone doesn't get any gum because she took three?  She said, *Oh well!*  I told her that I would say that to her when SHE had to go without gum one time because someone else was a piggy.  She just smiled and said, *But Gramma will have gum for me.  Right, Gramma?*  Lord but this kid knows me way too well.

When we got home, I made her eat some of the chili mac I had made for dinner because we weren't really sure when Johnnycakes would tear himself away from his friends to get her.  I wouldn't let her have a popsicle until after she ate.  She mostly ate the macaroni, which is at least filling if you eat enough of it.  However, I don't really think she did.  She was just so excited to be here.

When Johnnycakes picked her up, earlier than I imagined, she gave us a hard time about getting her shoes on because she didn't want to leave.  She wanted to go home, change her clothes (she told me pajamas) and come back here.  She had such a sad face when she left even though I told her that she would come back in the morning.  She made me feel like I had thrown her out.  I hope it's nice enough out tomorrow for us to go outside and pick out where we will put our flower garden.  The Beast said to just tell him where I wanted it and how big.  I was a bit surprised at how agreeable he was to it.

Speaking of the Beast, since the trees are getting ready to bloom, he decided he had better spray all of them before they do.  The peaches especially have a special spray they need to prevent peach curl.  So he gets out his ATV and the sprayer he has and manages to lose a special piece for it that rendered it useless.  So, off to Lowe's he goes to try to find a replacement piece.  He actually found one so he did manage to get the trees sprayed.  However, then he breaks a piece of the sprayer housing that he KNOWS he can't replace, which means buying another sprayer.  The one we have was purchased from Cabela's and was NOT cheap.  I could just strangle him.  I told him, *I have some atomic glue.  Wanna give it a try just gluing it back together?*  He just shot me a look like I was nuts.  Yeah, right.  *I* am the one that's nuts.  Uh huh.

BUT....I'm just glad he got the peaches sprayed.  The ones we have are just so delicious....when we have some.  I also hope we have beaten the fungus problem also.  All we can do is wait and see.  He put out his Japanese beetle traps so he's starting to feel like he's a farmer again.    It will, at least, keep him busy and out of my hair.

Love you all.  Hope you have a wonderful weekend.  Be happy.  Life is too short to carry unhappiness with you.

  • Nice Day At The Brat Farm For The Beast

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

I told the Beast about the buds on the trees so today he gets on the ATV to travel around all his trees to inspect them.  I WALKED around and looked.  WTF???  Bratfink said that it's just another sign of his continuing deterioration and I would have to say she's right.  When I commented on it to him, he just said that he doesn't have the stamina any more.  Guess she was right.  I just thought he was being lazy OR that he might just have wanted to run the ATV around since the one he was using hadn't been driven in a while.  But he wasn't quick enough to use that as an excuse because it wasn't the real reason.

Anyway, he now believes me and is a bit upset.  He knows that it will mean another year of almost no fruit on our trees if they break out in blossoms and: 1) the bees are not out foraging and, 2) if we have a frost.   It won't matter if it's while the blooms are up or the little fruit is, it will just kill the majority of all the early fruit we might have gotten off the trees.  Another bad year for the Brat Farm may be in store.  Say a little prayer, won't you?

It seems that the Beast didn't enjoy the nice weather that WE had here when he was in Southern Illinois.  He said it was too chilly there to even take out the boat on the lake.  He was kind of sorry he missed out on it because yesterday (Wednesday's weather I am talking about), it wasn't all that nice for him when he came home.  But today made up for that.  It was just gorgeous out.  It hit 72 degrees, was sunny, bright and just a gentle breeze out.  Of course, tonight is going to be very windy but we will be cozy  and protected here in the house.

We did a cooperative dinner prep tonight, the Beast and I.  I cut up the veggies and he added them to the meat that he was browning for our *Hamburger Garbage* (as we call it) in pita bread.  Our whole family loves it and it's a nice easy and cheap meal to make up.  Especially when you have a lot of kids like we did, including our kids friends who were sometimes around for dinner at our house.   We made up quite a bit because we will separate the leftover cooked meat and veggies for chili and spaghetti on different night.  The Beast wants me to make my chili mac for tomorrow then, on Saturday, if the weather is nice, he wants to make ribs again on the bbq.  I certainly have no objections to that.    He did have to ask me if we had an actual bbq sauce brush that we used (???? how long has he lived with me???) and I had to show him where it was kept.  It's not like he hasn't been in that drawer hundreds of times.  **Sheesh!**  I swear, men have memories about 2 seconds long, if that.

Now watch, he will have to ask me where it is again (or if we have one) when he goes to do the ribs.  I'll let you know.  This does, however, force me to go to the store tomorrow because I need to pick up a few things to go with the ribs that we are out of here.  I also want to pick up a couple different fruits for Chewlee and some gum.  I'll have her all day so we will have fun if it's a nice day outside.  We have to plan where our garden will be and then I have to figure out how big I want it so the Beast can get the cement blocks for it and the dirt to fill it.   I did tell the Beast that I am going to get a new mop because the mop he picked up was just too damn thick and soaked up half a pail of water.  It was also almost impossible to press enough water out of it even with his squeezer thingy he got.  He said that was the only mop Walmart had that was string/rope/whatever and I just laughed.  I told him there were more places that sold mops than Walmart.  I'll go where I bought my last one (even if it does eventually rust under the plastic...it still lasted three years and wasn't expensive).

Time to get this posted.  I can tell my how my curtains are blowing around that the wind is starting to pick up.  It isn't cold so it feels kind of nice where it flows under my monitor.  Love you all and have a great day.  TGIF!!!!!!!  Drive carefully because everyone is going to be in a hurry to get home (or to their favorite bar).

And, for your perusal, I give you this Irish Blessing for your life.

  • Oh Lord, The Beast Is Home!

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

The Beast calls me today around a quarter to 5 and announces that he should be home around 5:30pm.  It's so like him.  No warning that he was leaving his brother's house at all.  Just call and say I am almost there.  What was he thinking?  That he would catch me doing some exciting thing?  What?  Like running around naked with scissors?  Sheesh.  Yeah!  That's exciting all right.

He said he would call me when he was about 10 minutes from the house so I could throw on a hamburger for him.  I told him I was pissed that he didn't let me know, even if he had called me when he left.  I could have made more of a meal.  So, instead, all he got was his hamburger and a bowl of mandarin oranges.

He looked exhausted.  The trips seem to take a lot out of him.  The trip is only about 7 hours depending on weather and traffic.  We've made it in 6-1/2 hours without speeding.  That's really not all that bad a drive so I guess he's just not as up to it as he thinks he is.  When his brother owned his house in the Chicago area, the Beast always stopped at the house in southern Illinois because it was just too much for him.  That's about a 12 hour drive for us.  I usually stop in Louisville and stay with my daughter so I can pick her up and take her with me to the family reunion.  We stay with my ex-sister-in-law that we have (unofficially) adopted as our sister.  She's a doll.  We encouraged her to date the guy she just recently married finally.  He knew from the first that, if he did marry her, he got the whole package....our family.  Well, at least us girls.

From Louisville, it's about a 7 hour drive to Kay's house and I am always exhilarated when I get there.  Of course, there is some vodka involved.  I stop and buy some and some mixers before I hit the house.  I often pick up what I know is Kay's favorite liquor, too.  After all, I am without the Beast for at least a week.  **Grin**  HE doesn't get any surprises.  I always let him know when I am heading home.  He's such a slob, I need to give him the time to clean up the house before I get there.

The Princess stopped by and told me that Chewlee has become a little terror lately.  She's doing all kinds of naughty things that she's never done before.  The episode with the scissors is not the first.  It's just the first where she actually cut anything at all.  Usually the Princess catches her.  She hides the scissors but Chewlee always manages to find it.  She's been getting into the Princess's makeup and writing with it all over the bathroom.  She's also been sneaking food to eat in her bedroom.  That's a real puzzler because it's not like she is denied food at all.  Even at school, they will give her multiiple breakfasts when she wants more.  She eats breakfast at school when the Princess has school since it's so early in the morning when she must drop off Chewlee.  I had a hard time not laughing at some of the things the Princess is enduring lately.  It's not like Chewlee is a bad kid.  She's just mischievous and hates to be told NO.  She's just a bit sneakier than the Princess thought she could be.

Chewlee also got caught baring her butt to the world at school.  When she tried it at home, the butt found out what a hand feels like.  I doubt she will do THAT again.  When I catch her doing things she shouldn't, I always tell her that *ladies* don't do that and she is a lady, right?  She usually says to me, *Ladies don't do.......?*  I tell her yes and she will say *then I won't do it any more, Gramma!*  I figure that with repetition, she should eventually learn what is acceptable behavior.  Also, two teachers swear they thought she called them *bitches* but we think they misunderstood her because she has never said anything like that before....and trust me, she is not above using swear words around us.  It's up to us to catch her and tell her those are not acceptable language for a little girl.  She will drop something and say, *Oh shit!* and then get a guilty look on her face because she knows she is going to be chastised for it.  We know where she got that from.  It happens to be a phrase the Princess uses a lot.

The Beast was reluctant to go to bed although he looked totally wiped out.  I finally convinced him to go.  I believe you should listen to your body.  If it's telling you it needs your rest, go rest.  He finally went and was out like a light in less than five minutes.  I know.  I checked.  I check on him a lot to make sure he's breathing.  He has sleep apnea and that can be scary at times.  But, dammit!, he's always breathing.

Well, cooler weather tomorrow.  We will be getting some rain by the weekend but our temperature highs should be in the low 60's, which isn't all that bad.  Better than snow and ice.  Love you all and I hope you have a wonderful day.  I'll be here, like always.  No traveling for me until the end of June.

  • Tit Pits, Little Girls And Hair Cuts And Other Stuff

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

If you have large breats and go without a bra, you know what tit pits are.  It's that area underneath your bust that lays against your upper abdomen area.  You know, when they *go south*.  What I discovered while working hard around the house is that they sweat underneath them.  Most of the time, I remember to put some folded paper towel under them to prevent that area from getting uncomfortable or smelly.  They can, you know.  Get smelly, I mean.  I actually once tried putting deodorant under there because I had run out of powder.  Whatever you do, do NOT do that.  It happens to be a lot more sensitive area than your underarms and it will not be a fun experience.

I found out that some large breasted women will clean underneath with rubbing alcohol and then put something underneath to soak up the sweat.  If you are going to be sitting for any length of time even a wash cloth works.  I just found that, if you are going to be busy and walking about, the paper towel works best.  Okay...enough said on THAT subject for now.  I only bring this up because I don't usually have any *aroma* problems but.....I think that taking a bath yesterday was not what the doctor ordered.  Who knows why but I have always felt like you should rinse off under a shower after a bath regardless.  I have never really felt clean afterward unless I do that but I didn't yesterday.  I will be showering shortly and keep to my regular no-bra routine.

I almost had a heart attack yesterday when Sister Bee left me a comment on my blog that I should check out the Princess's facebook page.  It seems Chewlee CUT HER HAIR!!!!     I know.  It was too late to call or text her but I did it after I knew she was home from school.  I gather it was Johnnycakes that discovered her with the scissors and some hair as evidence.  Chewlee was in bed when the Princess got home from work so she couldn't check then but she did this morning when she got her ready for school.  She said she actually couldn't find the area where Chewlee cut any hair except for a small amount near her bangs.    I relaxed when I heard that because she has such long and beautiful hair.  I would hate to see her end up having to get a haircut (she's never had one and this is the first time she ever did anything like this).  I don't know what she was thinking.

I haven't heard from the Beast other than his phone call from his brother's house a couple hours after he got there.  Once he arrived, he headed to the bed for a nap.    It's okay for him to do that because it works both ways.  The last time the brother was here, he had to go lay down, too.    It really is a bitch getting old.

It wasn't quite as warm here today but it was still nice.  I love being able to have the windows and doors open so we get fresh air in here.  I found a few spots that I had missed when I waxed (how in the hell did THAT happen?) so I had to do some patch work fixing today.  It looks nice now.  I just hate to think how it will look about two days after the Beast and Baron return home, however.  It never lasts long with them around.

I walked around and looked at some of the trees.  They look like they may be getting ready to bud with all this warmer weather we are having.  They get confused so easily.  It would be tragic if they do bloom and we end up having cold weather or a frost or two again before true spring shows up.  This having fruit trees to worry about sure sucks sometimes.  But nature will do what it will.  We can only sit back and watch.  You can't do anything about the weather....yet.

Love you all and I hope you have a great Hump Day.  I remembered to put the garbage bins out since pickup is early Wednesday mornings.  Makes me wonder just how long their days are when they are showing up here around 4:30 am.  Be good, stay healthy and drive carefully.

  • SAME SHIT, DIFFERENT DAY......

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

I didn't do much of anything (again) today until after dinner time, I think it was.  For some reason, I got ambitious and decided to do a couple things.  It started with mopping the floor, especially after Chewlee spilled her soup all over.  I cleaned it up but you could tell where it had landed all over the floor under the table and her chair.

I did that while I had the TV on in the living room (don't tell the Beast) to keep me entertained.  I even went in and mopped my bedroom floor.  Now I can't do it all at one time.  It took me a while to get that much done.  As I sat there looking around, I then got the bright idea of waxing the damn floor, too.  That's how time got away from me.  When I do that, I do a little at a time.  It was the bedroom floor that really did me in.  I sat in the Beast's chair in there, turned on his puter and read the news.  Nothing earthshaking going on but I think I fell asleep for a bit in his chair.  I know I suddenly did one of those body jerks and woke up.  That's why I am late.  I had no idea what time it was but.....better late than never.

Love you all.  It was totally wonderful here today with temps in the 70's.  We are supposed to have more of it tomorrow so I will probably be doing something outside for a bit.  I need to prune my rose bush a little, I noticed today when I went out on the deck.  Lord, I hope you all are having some of this freakishly wonderful weather.  I hope you had a good Monday and a better Tuesday.

  • So I'm Sitting Here, Enjoying The Silence....

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

The Beast and Baron headed out this morning around 9:30am and hit the road for southern Illinois.  Right after they left, I went back to bed because I had a headache.  I thought it had left with the two of them but, alas!, that was not it.  I only slept for an hour but I got up without the headache.  I then decided to just sit back and enjoy my day without constant interruptions or a demanding dog's nose in my face or butt.  It's been heaven.

I really thought the Princess had told me that I would have Chewlee for a few hours until Johnnycakes got off work but she never brought her over.  By the time I noticed the time, I knew she was at work so I couldn't even call to find out what was what.  I'll find out tomorrow, I'm sure.

I suppose it could be that Johnnycakes didn't have to work or got home early enough that she didn't have to bring her over but it sure would have been nice if she had called me to let me know.  I had my plans.    I love when she's here and the Beast and Baron are away.  She is so cute when she takes over the Beast's recliner and TV.  You would think she was queen of the hill.  We still had a couple of the movies she picked out to watch.  I was even going to show her how the popcorn machine worked since she is so fascinated with it.  But...it will keep for next weekend when she is here.

I feel like I should be doing something wild and crazy to celebrate but it's not quite warm enough in the house to run around naked with scissors.    So I guess just having a mudslide and some expresso will have to do.  I love the contrast of the cold and sweet with the slightly bitter bite of the hot expresso.  It's not anything the Beast likes so I seldom indulge when he's here.

The Beast made a trip to Walmart yesterday to pick up some milk for me since he said I would need it, especially with having Chewlee here.  Oh yeah!  Like he really cared if I had to or not but it did give him a chance to pick up some snacks for him and Baron for their drive.  He came home with a huge bag of M&M's, two big bars of Harshey's Special Dark Chocolate, some Maple nut treats and something else that I don't recall.  Trust me, as he pulled them out, I could feel myself in a sugar high just looking at it all.  It's a wonder HE doesn't have diabetes!  He took half a bag of dog bones (a BIG bag) with him so he will have lots to share with his brother's two dogs.  We call them *Baron's cousins*.  One of his brother's dogs can actually open the back door out into the yard when no one is paying attention.  It wasn't fun for them during the winter.  The dog has a double coat and loved the snow and cold but they didn't like how cold the house got in a very short time!

I really like the style of the house they live in.  When you are inside, it feels like an A-frame but doesn't have that look from the outside at all.  At least that's fewer windows to worry about cleaning.  But the fireplace is central to the living area.  The loft bedroom is spacious.  Downstairs the master bedroom is huge with it's own bathroom and laundry area.  There's another bedroom just to the back of the fireplace but actually at the front of the house.  There's a huge walkin pantry area adjacent to the bathroom.  There's room enough in thee for another washer and dryer if you want and also has the hot water heater located at the far end.  The deck at the rear of the house is monstrous!  It's not covered but you have plenty of room for whatever you want to do.  It's big enough to fit about four or five tables with umbrellas.  You have a view (or did until they fenced it for the dogs) of the lake down the hill.  Oh, it's not a panoramic view because of all the trees in the area but it's enough to give you the feeling of lakeside living.

The big problem with the house is the construction.  The deck was added on and it's obvious that they had no clue how to go about doing it.  Parts of it are sinking and it's pitched in other areas, mostly along the side of the house.  The Beast says he's going to help his brother re-do it this summer.  I'm not going to hold my breath over that one and I hope his brother doesn't either.  He's been promising me that he would expand our deck for three years.  Now that his brother is retired and living in the new house full time, I'm wondering what excuse he will use to get out of helping HIM.

Well, I think I am going to go take a nice long bath.  That's another thing I seldom get to do when the Beast is here.  HE takes them almost every day and always has a fit when I want to take one because it drains the hot water tank, he says and that gets expensive.  It's always okay if HE does it but my doing it costs us money somehow or other.  I get tired of hearing it.  But, with him gone, the hot water is ALL MINE!!!!    It's the little things in life that make it enjoyable.

I'm not sure whether or not to celebrate or sit down and cry.  I got my Medicare card the other day and it's effective on June 1st.  That means (SOB!) that I will be 65, of course and it also means that I don't have to worry (much) about getting sick or possibly needing surgery.  I'll be covered.  It's been ages since I actually had coverage by a company that wasn't based somewhere in Canada or Europe, I swear.  I started out with one company that ended up being sold twice that I am sure of.  I have no clue if they are any good or not but I have definitely been thankful to be fairly healthy.  I have to make a trip down to the bank to be certain that they will not be paying out any more money to them as of May.  I finally found the most recent letter from them so that I can notify them that it will be the last time I pay them.  I'll make sure they know the bank is getting a copy of the letter and the reason behind it will be specified in it, too.

Well, time to go luxuriate in the bathtub so I will get this posted for later.  Love you all and I hope you had an enjoyable weekend and an even better week ahead.  Remember to drive carefully and watch out for the other guy.  Smile a lot today.  Confuse the hell out of everyone around you.

  • Feeling Old And Decrepit Today....But Some Good News!

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

My little darling showed up here around 10am with two strawberry Pop Tarts in hand for her breakfast, I imagine.  She actually only at one but it was a half of each.  The other halves I ended up tossing although she (literally) tried to force me to eat them.  I'll eat Toaster Strudel but not Pop Tarts.  The Princess always loved them, however, so it's no surprise that Chewlee does, too.

I should have been warned.  She almost literally destroyed me today.  She wasn't happy watching DVD's.  She wanted an interactive day and she has a cute way of dragging you into it whether you want to or not.  She spread out Tee-tee and that became our *magic carpet*.  We also had to lay on it to watch cartoons for a while.  She wanted us to make a jump rope even though we had no one to jump while we did it.  Then I was *roping* her and tying her up with one of my bathrobe belts so she could escape.  She cheats and pulls one arm out before I can get her wrapped up good so it takes her a bit to get out of it.  Next time...duct tape!

She spent a lot of time in my lap, mostly wiggling until my legs protested.  She spilled her soup all over the kitchen table and floor.  The Beast almost died since he had just cleaned it the other day but I will be doing it while (and here's the GOOD NEWS!) HE AND BARON GO TO HIS BROTHER'S HOUSE IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS.  **Grin**

Yeah, that was the fun part of today.  Chewlee helped me put clothes in the washer since the Beast said he was out of socks.  It wasn't until later that I realized the reason he was out of socks was because I had thrown a bunch of his old socks out and bought him some new ones....which were still in the package.  Sheesh!  What a moron.  They were right on top of his dresser, under his nose and he didn't see them.  He had told me not to put them in his drawer until I went through the old ones and I told him that HE could put them away then.  But, of course, he didn't.  At least all the wash is done.  I hadn't thought about the fact that I didn't do any while we were sick.  Since most of our time was spent in pajamas, the clothes hamper was primarily filled with socks and underwear.

The Beast packed up the stuff he's taking with him and attached the pontoon boat.  He's going to take the boat up to his brother's and leave it there for a bit until later in the year.  Knowing his brother (and his wife especially), they will probably get more use out of it than we usually do.  They live on a lake and they will be out fishing as much as the weather permits, I'm sure.  Plus, their kids visit them a lot so they can take the kids and grandkids out on it.  I just told the Beast that his brother has to pay for a new motor if he screws it up because he's not real big on maintenance, as we well know.  That's the most expensive thing on a pontoon boat.  But, I digress.....

So, Chewlee was so damned active today that she made you tired just keeping track of her.  I went out in the kitchen to get her some chocolate milk and she managed to spill my coffee.  Not all of it but it DID make a mess and I was angry with her because I told her to stay out of my desk chair.  But, of course, she just couldn't help herself.  She likes to get in it and spin around.

She says the most sincere sounding *I'm sorry, Gramma.* over and over when she does something like that.  I finally told her that I was tired of hearing her say that and it would be much better if she just listened and didn't do anything to be sorry about.  I don't think she understands that concept, however.  You just have to shake your head over it all.

But...my back aches, my feet hurt and I am very glad I won't be taking care of her for long tomorrow.  I don't think I would live through it.

I actually got a call from Iraq today.  At least from someone that is working in Iraq.  It's Chewlee's paternal grandfather, who has been there for about four or five months now, I believe.  He had been trying to get ahold of the Princess and it wasn't going through or something so he got worried and called me.  I told him she was fine, just working and she can't talk on her phone while she's working.  I also told him that she had picked up some extra shifts but that I would be sure to tell her that he was trying to get ahold of her.  Until she got this job, they usually talked via Skype so he could see Chewlee (and vice versa).  He's afraid she'll forget him and, of course, he loves her to death.  How could you not?  Even now, feeling as *run over* as I do, she still makes me smile when I think of some of the cute things she does and says all the time.  Even the Beast adores her and he doesn't like kids much at all usually.

Okay, I am beat and need a nap so I am posting this now for you all to read later.  Love you all.  Have a great Sunday and I wish you all a nice day so you can enjoy it.

  • An Open House And Chewlee, Too

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

It was another great day here at the Brat Farm.  Great weather, open windows and storm doors and both the Beast and I seem to be almost over whatever it was that has had us in it's grips the past couple weeks.  It's especially evident in the Beast.  He didn't even take a nap today which is totally unusual.  He normally takes at least one nap a day.  It's just that it was so nice out that we both enjoyed the day and didn't want to waste any of it.  Especially since we both have the feeling that it won't last for long.

What's funny to me (and shows how acclimatized we've become) is that, if we were still living in Florida, this temperature weather would have seen us bundled up and feeling as cold as the people who actually see snow.  I kid you not.  I'm pretty sure it has to do with the constant high humidity and the fact that our cold weather was always accompanied by high winds.  But, if you go to any place in South Florida when the weather is 60 degrees or thereabouts, you will find most of the Floridians bundled up.

Here?  After 3 complete winters here, we were in short sleeve shirts and not even a jacket on.  I would never have believed it if someone had told me this would happen.  I do remember Sister Bee once laughing about it when we lived in Florida and telling me that at 60 degrees, Chicagoans would be in short sleeved shirts, etc.  She couldn't believe that we were suffering in Florida and actually had the heat going in our homes.  Weird but true.

I picked Chewlee up from school today.  It's the first time in almost two months.  Her class was outside and was just coming in when I got there and you would NOT have believed how excited she got.  She kept running around yelling, *My gramma is here!  My gramma is here!*  She hugged all her teachers and told them goodbye as I collected her jacket and tee-tee to take home.  Chewlee kept hugging my leg because she didn't really believe that I was picking her up......and on BUBBLE GUM DAY!!    For those of you that aren't aware, the school puts out a bowl of candy and all the kids get to pick a piece (or two or three ) on their way home.  She calls it *bubble gum day* because it's the one day her mother lets her have bubble gum.  The women that are in the front office have taken to making sure that they have gum for her in case it's all gone from the bowl when she goes home.  Not that there isn't always candy, but the gum seems to be popular.

She looked so cute today.  She had on a pair of those legging type pants with embroidery on the left leg down around the ankle area.  She had a long sleeve top on that had a smocked front.  Her hair was just left hanging down in ringlets and it's getting so long.  Even in ringlets it's almost down to her waist.  Now if only she didn't give you a hard time when you go to brush it.  Sometimes it's a real chore.

She told me she was hungry but she actually was *fun-gry*.  She didn't want soup or *sketti-o's* or hot dogs even.  But, she ate some yogurt, some ice cream with chcolate syrup, some pickles, some bbq potato chips and, of course, her usual chocolate milk.  If I had realized that she was going to be here with me as long as she ended up, I would have insisted she eat something substantial.  She told me she ate broccoli at *dinner* today and I figured she either meant lunch at school or her dinner last night.  She told me she got some on her fingers (she thinks most foods are finger foods) and she had to lick it off.

She used my foot massager today after telling me that her feet were really tired and they needed to be *tickled*.  We got into an argument about her taking her socks off and she insisted that she had to take them off or it didn't work.  That's how *mommy* (the Princess) does it she told me in a kind of superior way.  Like I was really misinformed about how it worked.  THAT made me laugh.

I ended up with Chewlee because a girl quit at the restaurant where the Princess is working so she picked up a couple more shifts.  The way she explained it to me, I was to pick up Chewlee from school and Johnnycakes would pick her up after he got done at the gym at the latest.  So, I was perplexed when it hit 8pm and still no Johnnycakes.  I don't have his phone number (I forgot to move my numbers over to my new phone) so I called the Princess.  I knew she wouldn't be able to answer it but she keeps it on vibrate and would see who called her when she got a few minutes.  Sure enough, she called me about 15 minutes later and she said she would call and find out what was up with Johnnycakes.  When she called me back, she said she thought he might have fallen asleep but she would keep calling him until he answered.

When Johnnycakes showed up, I said to him, *You forgot you had to pick her up?*  He told me, *No.  It would have been nice if the Princess had told him about it or at least texted him since she obviously got called in to work after he was already gone.*  So, tomorrow, when she drops off Chewlee, I will have to beat her up with a cold, wet noodle or something.  It was totally HER fault.  Since he was asleep when the Princess got ahold of him, I doubt poor Chewlee will have gotten the bath she really, really wanted to take before she was put to bed.  I may have to give her one tomorrow (or rather, let her take one.  All I do is wash her hair for her and check to make sure she's clean).

Love you all.  Have a wonderful weekend.  Do some fun things.  Be frivolous.  Be funky.  Dance like no one is watching.
