  • A Harry Potter Day And A Correction

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

First of all, let me correct myself from a boo-boo.  I said yesterday that Sheepie and the Princess had gone to the show to see *It’s Complicated* and I gave credit to the female star being Glenn Close.  It’s not.  It’s Meryl Streep.  My apologies to all and a thanks to Bratfink for calling it to my attention.

Today, Sheepie and I watched the Harry Potter movies from the start.  We had watched the newest one (The Half Blood Prince) yesterday but decided to do them all today.  It’s so neat to watch them all growing up as the story goes along.  Sheepie thinks that Draco is really good looking as he grows up but doesn’t like the character he plays.  She also has a *thing* for Ron.    And, of course, Harry gets better looking as he gets older, too.  Hermione is a doll and she looks absolutely beautiful in her dress for the ball in *Chalice of Fire*.

It was fun to sit here together and make our comments.  Almost as much fun as Bratfink and I have watching our movies together when we are online (but watching the same thing).  Hey!  It works for us.    The difference is our ages.  Sheepie’s concerns and likes are formed by her age group.  She notices things like hair styles and makeup and other things that don’t really matter to me and, truthfully, I wouldn’t have noticed if she had not called them to my attention.  Try it one day.  It’s an interesting experience.

In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been experimenting with different typefaces on my blog.  I’ve decided that I like this one best of all so it will do me for now.

I will have Chewlee tomorrow night (New Year’s Eve) so that the Princess and her fiance (isn’t that cute?  It still tickles me) can go out or do whatever it is they want.  Buttmunch will be home by about 9:30pm so there will be plenty of time for her and Circle to celebrate and be there for the midnight kiss for a Happy New Year.  And that is what I wish for everyone.  HAPPY NEW YEAR! AND A HEALTHY ONE, TOO FOR EVERYONE.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY.

  • Discovery Channel Is Enough To Give You The Shakes Some Days

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

I swear that between scientific programs into the Mayan calendar and others found around the world predicting the end of TIME..and the others talking about the building natural disasters that could be ready to occur, it’s enough to make you want to find a cave and stay there.

Sheepie and I spent the day pretty much watching all the programs on Discovery Channel and you could have nightmares just over the one about Yellowstone National Park.  Especially since they show you how the topography of the park has changed over the years (and a great many of them just within the past 20 years) and it’s scary as hell.    I know!  No one can really predict it but think of the consequences of a super-eruption in that location.  World-wide starvation just from the ash in the air.  Do I run out and buy myself some grow lights, seeds, garden soil, fertilizer, osmosis machine (to clean up the water even for drinking) and start stocking up on canned goods, gasoline (for the generator that will be needed) and stock my freezer too?  And what about sterno?  Propane?  The list could go on and on.  Makes you wonder if some of the survivalists don’t have a point.

Once it was atomic war that they were concerned with; then civil unrest.  Now it’s natural disasters and global warming. Where does it end?

Not to make light of things or even to ignore it but if something does happen, we are pretty much powerless.  We CAN do things NOW to help lessen the effects of global warming but even scientists disagree on whether or not it may actually be a natural process and we are heading into a new ice age.  Could this actually be part of the process of natural selection of even human beings?  A way to thin the herd, so to speak?  With the sheer numbers of people that would die from the effects and lack of resources available, it would also be a time of cleansing for the earth.  A time when the skies would be able to clear and so would the waterways.  The land could rest and animals recover in some areas while they die or are killed off in others due to the need for food.

Interesting concept, isn’t it?  It sure made for a lively discussion.  Do you ever indulge in those with your family, spouse, children, neighbors?  Or do you sit there and just think, *Well, that’s interesting!* and go on with your day without giving it another thought?  I think a great many people do that and never really consider that it could happen in our time.  This is the possible legacy we are going to be leaving to our children and their children to survive.  Have we given them the tools?  And just what *tools* are the most likely to be needed?  Think about it.  It’s an interesting process.  Maybe those camping and hiking trips and even planting gardens will be more useful than you ever considered when you DIDN’T do them with your kids.  Maybe now is the time to stock up on spices that will be helpful if the economy or the climate changes and you need things to trade because money won’t mean a thing.

Oh, scientists keep saying the big eruption of Yellowstone may not take place for 10,000 years but it could happen in 1,000.  There’s no way to tell.  Don’t be an alarmist but don’t take this world for granted, nor your way of life.  Do what you can to help.  Recycle.  Conserve water (shower with a buddy ).  Neuter your cats and dogs to prevent unnecessary births AND deaths due to neglect.  Use those leftovers instead of wasting food.  See what you can do to lessen the burden on this world that is our only home.  Man may one day go to the stars and people other planets but I don’t think it will happen in our lifetime.  So, be kind to the earth and lessen the catastrophic forces perhaps that may be building from our carelessness.

    Recycle, dammit!  Love you all.

  • Brutus Makes Sheepie Cry

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

Damn but I truly hate that man.  He truly is just a sperm donor with no sense about raising a child.  Or even how to treat people.  He actually expected us to take her to a greyhound bus station in the wee hours of the morning so she could get in at a convenient time for the stepmother (one of many).  Talk about a pussy-whipped man.  I could scarcely believe that he traded in HIS truck in order to buy her some little crappy car as sheepie puts it.  This guy is supposed to be starting a job on the 4th of January (I believe that’s the date) and just how in the hell is he supposed to get back and forth?

Anyway, it seems that Clawdiah just can’t be bothered to drive to Tallahassee at a decent 9:30pm because she is going to have family in town.  Which was the first that Sheepie had heard of it (and even Brutus hadn’t).  Now get this…..Brutus and Clawdiah are married to each other but they do NOT live together.  He is expected to pay HER bills (and trust me on this…HER bills come first!).  I asked Sheepie if she was a big enough woman to *take* him if he laid a hand on her and she smiled and shook her head yes.  Made ME laugh!    It does explain a lot.

Anyway, Brutus started screaming at Sheepie and telling her that she was expecting them to live their lives around HER schedule and Sheepie, bless her heart, said to him, *Excuse me!  But we set up the bus trip schedule to suit Clawdiah, not what *I* wanted.  It seems to me that you are telling me that she can’t be bothered so the hell with me.   Why can’t you just TELL her that she HAS to since you were left with nothing in order to buy HER a crappy car?*  His answer to his young daughter?  F**K YOU! and he hung up on her.

The Beast was totally pissed off.  He said, *They want US to not get home until 3am in the morning because the bitch can’t be bothered????  No way in hell.*  We told Sheepie to just tell him that if that was the way he felt, then we would just keep her.  Buttmunch was prepared to stay a couple more days…just in case.  A little while later, Brutus called back and said they could manage it anytime after Wednesday.  As it stand now, we will send her home on Friday afternoon.  That way they can celebrate all they want on New Year’s Eve and have time to recover before they have to pick her up.  At first, we thought Thursday but that would mean that Brutus and Clawdiah would not be able to start celebrating until late and that would piss them off.  So what’s one more day so that Sheepie won’t be yelled at for nothing that is her fault at all.  It all had to do with what Brutus wanted and then to accommodate Clawdiah.

Poor Sheepie was crying and so upset over the initial call.  I felt bad for her because the man is a real asshole redneck bastard (I apologize for being so blunt).  It still pisses me off when I think how he abused my daughter and the injuries he caused her (and her too embarrassed and far away to tell us about it).  There is one guy that is a waste of flesh and wouldn’t be missed if someone threw some chlorine in the gene pool and he disappeared.  He gives rednecks a bad name all on his lonesome.

She and the Princess went to the show tonight to see the movie *It’s Complicated* with Glenn Close, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.  The Princess claimed it was a good movie and I gather that Sheepie liked it too.  She really wanted to see Avatar but it is a 3-hour movie and the Princess has to work early tomorrow.  Plus, with having to dress the baby and drop her off at preschool (yes, the baby started preschool this week at one of the local church schools.  It’s a Headstart program more than likely) it means getting up earlier than she likes.

I watched Chewlee since Johnnycakes had to work and would have had to leave before they got home.  As soon as mommy left, she insisted she wanted to watch *Zilla*.  I took it down and she picked out the one she wanted to see.  Then, when that one was done, we had to watch the one with Minizilla and assorted others on Monster Island.  We actually watched it TWICE.  When it finished, she insisted we watch that one AGAIN.  I think I can safely say it’s her favorite right now.  She likes the fact that the little boy and Minizilla are friends.

It’s 34 degrees out and that ugly weather front is still heading our way.  I don’t know if it’s gotten lighter or not but I will watch the weather channel in a little bit to get a feel for how it’s going to be the next couple of days.  It sure felt cold and kind of *icy* when Sheepie and I went out to Walmart and then to KFC to pick up dinner.

Love you all and I hope you keep warm and stay healthy.

  • Weird Day, Strange Night

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

All of us girls were up pretty early today, which was a good thing since Buttmunch and Sheepie were going to go shopping with the Princess.  We got up at 7:30am so they had plenty of time to wake up without rushing and then get ready to go.  As it was, the Princess was just a teensy bit later than she said she would be.

Sheepie was very happy shopping because she got some of the things she wanted cheaper than she expected.  In fact, about half the price.  A couple things were even cheaper than half off.    They all had a good time until Sheepie’s boyfriend texted her to break up.  It was so stupid because he had misread or been misinformed about something she had written on her Myspace.  It had to do with another guy (one that’s been kind of stalking her) but a *friend* apparently told him it was HIM she was calling *ugly* and telling him he should *leave her alone*.  Dumb shit stuff that teenagers go through.  Later on, he texted her again after he had read it himself and he apologized to her.  *Rolling my eyes here*  Kids!

The Princess and Buttmunch tried to console her when she first got the text, telling her to let it rest for a bit until he cooled down and THEN make sure he got it straight.  She wouldn’t let it stay for long so she texted him to read her Myspace himself to see what was really said.  Hence, the apology I guess.  Whatevah!

By the time they got home, she had at least calmed down.  It was not too long afterward that he apologized and she brightened up considerably.  I was kind of glad they were both with her because they could give her both some advice that she might consider (they aren’t *too old*) and make her laugh, too.

The Beast still isn’t feeling good and pretty much spent the day either napping or in his recliner with his dog in his lap.  I’m sure you’ve seen the picture I posted a while back.  Looks so funny to see a doberman in his lap on the recliner.  I guess Baron knew he wasn’t feeling well because he didn’t bother him too much for things like letting him outside to do his business.  He came to me or one of the girls most of the time.

The day turned out to be really nice here.  It was bright and sunny and got up to 48 degrees.  Then, it slowly started changing.  I’m worried it might actually turn out to be a forerunner of the weather front that is hitting the Midwest.  If so, that means a disastrous end to Sheepie’s visit here.

We spent some time together yesterday and today (Sheepie and I) playing Trivial Pursuit on Pogo.  She helped me out on a few things but she was surprised at the answers I knew that she had no clue about.  Many of them were NOT ancient history.    But it was fun and we talked about this and that, just getting to know each other.  She looked over some of the pictures I had up on my walls in here that had her in them and asked questions.  I also was reminded of some of the things she remembered best about me.  It was cute and interesting.  I told her some of the things I loved about her then and how glad I was that she really hadn’t lost those traits.  She laughed because they are some of the things that get her into trouble because she hasn’t QUITE gotten control over them.  Her mouth is usually moving before her brain kicks in.

I made us some hot chicken wings to snack on this evening and found out that Sheepie (like her mother and I) likes hers HOT!  If she doesn’t start to sweat, they aren’t quite up to her standards.  And I hadn’t made them really hot because I didn’t know.  Oh well…..next time.

The Beast is up and making the girls laugh.  Lord only knows what they are discussing.  I really don’t care, I’m just glad they are having a good time.  I’ve got to get this set up now for posting later.  Love you all and have a great day tomorrow (today when you read this).  I hope you have good weather wherever you are.  Take care.

  • I Brave The Cold And Dark For Sheepie

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

The Beast laid down for a nap after all the activities around 7:30pm or so and fell fast asleep with no sign of waking.  I didn’t want to go in and wake him by turning on the light so that I could set the alarm for 4am.  Buttmunch and I needed to be up by 4 and on the road no later than 4:30am in order to arrive before Sheepie in Birmingham.  That posed a problem so I resolved it in the only way I could think of at the time.  I went to sleep in my recliner with the TV on a channel that I knew switched over to commercial television at 4am.  Smart, huh?  It ALWAYS wakes me up.

And today was no exception.  The only thing I hadn’t thought about was what to wear since it was only 30 degrees out.  That meant I would also have to be looking out for black ice on the road, which scares the crap out of me.  It’s been too many years since I had to deal with that.  I managed to find a warm, turtle-neck sweater in my closet in here and put on my blue jeans.  I already had socks on my feet and my down coat was hanging in the coat closet in the hallway.  I barely got some coffee poured when Buttmunch started getting worried about the time.

The Beast finally woke up to tell us that we would never make it as army commandos because we were too noisy.  I curtly told him that we weren’t trying to be quiet.  Why should WE be the only ones to suffer.  Then, wouldn’t  you know it but the GPS starts giving me a problem.  It had such tiny buttons on it for the address and I kept thinking it was a lot smaller than I remembered.  As I suspected, it was the Beast’s and it didn’t fit on the base that was up in the car.  So, I had to dig out the right one and redo the address we needed to find.  Sure enough, the *buttons* were a bit bigger so it didn’t give me a hard time by putting the wrong letters up so that I had to erase and do it again.

Finally, we were all set and the car was warmed up so off we went.  I put the car on cruise when I could because it’s way too easy to speed and it would be my luck to get a ticket.  We actually made it in an hour and a half and not the two hours that both the Beast and the Princess said it would take.  And, although there was plenty of hoarfrost on the fields, we didn’t run into any black ice.    The gods were good to me.

This greyhound station was located downtown and not a bad area at all like most of them are.  We got there early enough to walk around the station which was large, clean and the people on duty were actually not bad.  At least they weren’t surly like most of the ones it’s been our experience to find working at them.  As soon as Sheepie got her bag, we loaded it in the trunk and headed home.  She was tired and wanted a shower and then to go to bed.  When we did get home, although Buttmunch had left the electric blanket on so that the bed was nice and warm for her, her own clothes in her suitcase were icy cold.  I laughed because she put her jammies under the blanket to warm them up before she showered.

I did take care of changing her departure time before her bus arrived and what does she tell us but that Brutus didn’t want us to change it.  I told her *sorry but it’s too late*.  It’s not bad enough that we paid for her to come for just two and a half days as it is, and an hour and a half drive both ways but now HE is trying to say when and where?   Not a chance in hell.

The girls are going to Huntsville to do some shopping.  Sheepie got Christmas money from both her mother and me and she has her list made.  She was actually PRE-shopping online to see what it was she was going to buy and how much it would cost her.  She also got a gift card for a VERY upscale shop and she will be using it while she is shopping with the Princess.

The Princess, Johnnycakes and Chewlee came by for a bit.  The poor baby needed a nap but there was just too much going on here for that to happen.  I had told that to the Princess but they came anyway.  The baby and I retreated to my computer room (which Johnnycakes calls Chewlee’s second home)   and she said she wanted to watch *Zilla*.  So I pulled down the box with the collection of five movies and she picked out the one she wanted by the picture on the outside of the pack.  She then had to put it in the holder for the dvd player and we settled back.  I really thought I almost had her asleep at one point but she suddenly realized what I was trying to do and insisted I had to get into my computer chair and out of the recliner.  She still climbed in my lap and we watched *Zilla*.  She always knows when he’s coming.  It’s just too funny.  She also recognizes Gabara when he shows up on the screen and will yell his name and get excited because she knows there’s gonna be a fight.

The Princess, Johnnycakes, The Beast and Buttmunch played some Back Alley Bridge while all this was going on (Sheepie was doing her online PRE-shopping and we watched two Godzilla movies).  They had to leave to go to Johnnycakes grandmother’s and Chewlee calls her *Granny*.  I’m sure the baby will be going to bed early and sleeping late tomorrow.

The Beast is not feeling good.  He says he hasn’t felt good for a few days but he’s very worried right now because he’s feeling so cold and so dizzy.  I asked him if he wanted to go to the hospital but he just wanted to rest and keep warm.  I made him some tea and honey and will keep checking on him until he finally goes to bed.  Then it’s in god’s hands because I am so darn tired myself that I am planning on going to my REAL bed early.

Love you all and will report on the girl’s shopping spree tomorrow for your pleasure.  Have a wonderful day.

  • Tired But Happy

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

The day is over and I’m exhausted.  It was very tiring even though everything went smoothly and I wasn’t rushed at all.  Buttmunch, Tara and the Princess pretty much cleaned up everything afterward except for putting the leftover food into containers.  I still have to do that but it will be done as soon as I finish this blog and get it set up for later.  Buttmunch and I will be heading for bed early because we have to leave early to pick up Sheepie from Birmingham, which is a 2 hour drive.

I got the most incredible massager cushion.  It fits into my computer chair and I found out how many sore spots I had the first time I used it after dinner.  I think that may have contributed to my tired feeling.  It can either massage up and down or I can set it to just massage a certain area of my back.  I got that from the Princess and Buttmunch.  I also got a bamboo cutting board from Buttmunch, which I was so glad to have.  I can get rid of one that I finally just put underneath my toaster to catch crumbs because it had warped just enough to make you nuts when you were trying to cut things on it.  I have a big one but sometimes it’s just too much if all you want to do is cut up an onion, for example.

I got some Honey Almond soap and bath gel, which I love.  Buttmunch bought me some a few years ago and I was sorry when I ran out of it.  I never could find the same stuff and gave up looking for it.  The Princess also bought me a really comfy, warm pair of sleep pants that say *The Grinch* all over them.  I was thinking about giving the Beast a pair of those since it really fits him more than me.  I’m wearing them as I write this since it’s 32 degrees outside.  Why do I think that nature is going to conspire to make my trip to Birmingham a nightmare?  Watch it snow now.

The Princess and Johnnycakes are now officially engaged.  He gave her an engagement ring today.  The stinker hid it in her stocking so all she thought he had bought her was a couple (very sexy) pajamas.    Chewlee got so many gifts that she actually got tired of opening them.  She told her mother *I’m done!* and refused to open any more.  She got lots of clothes from her mother, me and her other grandmother.  Her paternal grandfather probably bought her some, too, but the big doll house was the main present.  Then he got her things for putting inside it.   The Princess is upset because it’s not made for being outside and it’s way too big to be in the house.  I would imagine they will keep it on the sun porch, which means Chewlee won’t be doing much with it until the weather gets warmer.

Poor Johnnycakes was sick today.  It sounds like he got whatever Chewlee had since he was vomiting and couldn’t get to sleep after working all night.  But he finally got warm and fell asleep.  He managed to make it over here when he felt better to open his gifts from us and spend a little time getting kidded about his engagement and his way of giving her the ring.

Tara and the boys were fun to see since it’s been a while but they were both on the quiet side today, which is unusual.  But they both ate well and told me how good dinner was and it sounded less like good manners and more like real sincere thanks.  The baby sure enjoyed eating his mother’s food and he had already been fed when they first got here.  That tickled me.

So, I feel good about the day.  The Beast enjoyed his gifts and teased the girls about the frames they bought him.  He said he just needed more walls now to hang them on.  My reply to that was, *We have plenty of walls without any pictures*.  Hint..hint!

I hope you had a great day today with lots of food, friends, family and just good company.  Chewlee was a bit on the cranky side and her mother had to put her in *time out* a couple times because of it.  Later, when Buttmunch, the Princess and the Beast played cards, I took her into my room where she told me she wanted to watch *Godzilla* (I kid you not) and we watched it while I rocked her.  She still isn’t feeling good and just wanted to be held and comforted.  But she does love the Godzilla movies.  The Princess is sure that we both are *weird* as she put it.

Love you all and hope you have a great day today.  Get those leftovers taken care of and freeze some if you have too much to get rid of in a day or two.  Did you know the average American gains 7 lbs over the holidays?  Hmmmm.  What do you do in the winter to exercise that away?  Or is a diet in your future?  Inquiring minds want to know.

  • HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS….!

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

Merry Christmas one and all from the Brat Farm bunch!  What a busy day we had yesterday to get ready for today.  There was some last minute shopping we had to do for ingredients for some special requests and, of course, Buttmunch had really not bought anything before getting here except her gift for Sheepie.  So there was much gnashing of teeth and decisions to be made, then more boxing and wrapping of gifts.  Then the cleaning up and putting things away to clear things for the company.

I decided to do a little more decorating since we really haven’t had the weather to do any outside.  As I am writing this, it is so windy we could hardly get the door open and the rain is hitting the front storm door head on.  Since there is a roof over the front porch, it just goes to show you how strong the wind is.  It’s been raining off-and-on for two days now.  So, if I can’t have my lights OUTSIDE, I am putting up some more lights INSIDE.

The ham is in the sink still defrosting.  I had to put it in the freezer due to limitations of space in my fridge.  Buttmunch and I are going to peel the hard boiled eggs later because I am making some deviled eggs for us to munch on.  I also picked up some veggies for dipping in ranch dressing, some of my homemade salsa and chips plus dip for the potato chips for those that don’t like salsa.  Poor Chewlee will be hard put to decide WHAT she wants.

She’s still not well.  It shows mostly in her wanting to be held and her diaper.  That’s the penicillin or whatever it is the doctor put her on for the stomach virus she had.  She’s not eating like she normally does and, on occasion, I see her put her hand in front of her mouth and just stand still for a minute or so.  That has to be when she is feeling like she might throw up, poor baby.  I ended up taking care of her for half the day due to her paternal grandfather having her for the morning until they got ready to leave.  Yes, he brought the sperm donor with him.  I heard Chewlee calling him *daddy* and I figured he must have worked hard to get her to call him that.  But I fixed his ass.  As we were going home, I said to her, *Aren’t you a lucky girl!  You got two papas and two daddy’s.*  She was quiet for a minute and then she said, *Two papas, and two daddy’s!*  Like it made sense to her that she should have two of each.  I thought to myself, *Take THAT sperm donor!*

It takes a lot more than showing up once a year to merit being called *Daddy*.  And he’s still not sending any money to help feed, clothe or keep a roof over her head so where does HE get off???  It really pisses me off big time.

Oh well, this is not a day to be angry with anyone.  I wish you all a wonderful, wonderful day.  I love you all, today and every day of the year.  Be happy and don’t overwork yourself.  Enjoy!

  • Buttmunch Arrives

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

The Beast and I were up late last night…until almost 3am.    Ya, I know…who would have believed it?    So we didn’t get up until rather late, especially for the Beast.  He’s usually up shortly after the crack of dawn (but he DOES take a nap after I get up).

So, we got up around 11am.  I wanted to shower before I had to leave to pick up Buttmunch and that meant blow-drying my hair.  I will NOT go out in the cold with a wet head, especially since I am still trying to recover from the nasty cold I’ve had.

I showed up about 25 minutes before her bus actually showed up.  It was about 20 minutes late so it sure wasn’t my fault.  No problem, I sat in the car listening to Country & Western Christmas carols.  Some of them are a real hoot.  I just love *Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer* and have since it came out more years ago than I want to admit.  At least they have some humorous stuff that makes you laugh when you need it.

When Buttmunch got her stuff from the bus, we did our hug and kiss and headed for Publix to get some food stuffs I can only find there.  It’s our one stop we never miss when we go up to Huntsville.  I picked up a selection of lunchmeats, breads and cheese since Sheepie will be here and we will also have Chewlee on Saturday.

Poor Buttmunch had been up most of the night and only got about 3 hours sleep so I  took pity on her and gave up the idea of stopping for lunch and a few drinks.  We just went straight home.  She decided NOT to take a nap so she would sleep during the whole night but I sure took a short one…45 minutes short.

So what happens?  The Princess calls to ask her to go with her to help her pick something out.  I think it was a present for the Beast which she was dreading to buy.  He’s so hard to buy for since, like I’ve said before, he doesn’t deny himself anything.

So, I’m cutting this short for tonight and getting it ready for posting later.  The two girls are home now and we shall be heading for bed shortly..  Love you all and hope you are as ready for Christmas as we are.

  • Down And Dirty Time!

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

I have to go pick up Buttmunch tomorrow in Huntsville and I am so looking forward to that.  I can stop at Publix on the way back and pick up a few things I need/want which I mentioned yesterday.  I was also told today to make sure and tell Buttmunch that she is expected to make her spinach dip for us so we will have to get the ingredients for THAT while we are out, too.

Today is the day I had to get down and dirty about getting ready for guests.  I was putting fresh linens on the guest bed and decided, since that room is the coldest one in this house, that I would use my electric blanket the Beast got for me last year on it.  I always worry about people being cold.  Even as a kid, I used to get up during the night and check all the kids and the newest baby in the house to make sure they were covered.  I remember when Bratbaby was just a few months old and I found her soaking wet from her diaper.  I turned up the gas space heater we had for heat in our house (so the blower would go on) and changed her into dry clothes.  I then changed her bedding but had to dry her blanket in the heat of the space heater since I couldn’t go into my mother’s room for a clean one.  It didn’t matter.  Once I put her back in her crib and put the warm blanket on her, she went right to sleep.  I was just glad she had been cleaned up and had a dry diaper and nightie on.

Since our weather has been kind of up and down temperature-wise, the electric blanket could solve any problems with that.  But I can’t find the darn thing.  At least not with a cursory look.  I’ll have to get out my step stool and take a good look on the shelf where I am pretty certain I put it.  That way they will have the quilt, the electric blanket and the spread on it to make sure they stay warm enough during the night.

I spent almost three hours cleaning up my computer room and guess what I found?  I almost died when I did.  The first present I bought for Chewlee!    I know…I couldn’t believe I didn’t miss it when I was wrapping all the gifts.  It’s the laptop learner I got for her.  So I have ONE more present to wrap for Chewlee.

I love all the presents under the tree.  It looks so neat to have all those pretty boxes under it.  It’s going to look very naked when they are all opened and gone from it.  But, right now, it looks so great!

Chewlee’s paternal grandfather ended up buying her a *dollhouse* that is actually a little playhouse.  It’s big enough for Chewlee.  Johnnycakes actually put it all together (I have no idea where but it wasn’t at their house) and he’s going to take it apart to get it home and set it up for her.  That is probably what he will be doing after Chewlee goes to bed Christmas Eve.  I know she is going to love it.

It’s still early (kinda, sorta) and I have lots more to get done to get ready for Buttmunch to be here.  Love you all and I hope you are having a great time getting ready for the holidays.  Hope you get what you want the most and have friends and family to enjoy it with.  For any Jewish readers, Happy Hanukkah!  I always thought the Festival of Lights was a cool one.  Love those traditions, don’t you?

    TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM

I was disappointed today to find out that not one person commented on my query about my *unusual* Christmas tradition of always having a gift for the *unexpected stranger*.  Maybe I should have just asked about any other unusual traditions that people have.  That would be interesting, too.  It’s up to you guys out there.  Do YOU have any unusual Christmas traditions in your family?  Perhaps one that is stranger or just a cute one?  I don’t mean the milk and cookies out for Santa kind.  Think about it and leave a comment.

In thinking back to my childhood, I remembered something that makes me think the practice might actually be something I adapted from my childhood, coupled with a feeling of empathy where I never wanted to see someone feel bad because there was nothing for them.  Silly, perhaps.  But that’s me.  My mother always used to add an extra potato to the pot for *unexpected company* that might drop by right around dinner time.  This was actually a smart thing for her because she was well known as a good cook.  With a family as large as ours, there was normally enough food to go around for a crowd especially on Sunday when Mom’s special fried chicken was on the menu.  It was amazing how often we had *unexpected* company.    There was no way in the world that Mom would have even considered turning someone away from joining our meal.

When my kids were younger, I always bought an extra game for that *unexpected* guest since it was likely to be one of their friends.  If not, it was always one my kids didn’t have and I could just add it to their collection of games that they played with friends.  It wasn’t until they got older that I changed the type of gift.  I never wanted anyone to be there and not be able to feel welcomed and not able to participate if we were opening gifts.

We had the tradition that we all took turns opening up gifts, one-by-one.  The youngest one that could read passed around the gifts, one to each person and then we took our turns.  Those of us that lived in the household had to wait until the *expected* participants got there before they could open ANY gifts.  Trust me, some Christmas’s my kids hated the waiting.    BUT…we also allowed them to open ONE gift on Christmas eve.  They could select the gift to open and that was sometimes a real pain in the butt as they tried to decide which one to open.  Once in a while, there were certain gifts that were set aside that could NOT be one of the chosen ones.  The reasons for that differed and doesn’t matter now.  Sometimes it was just because the kids were heard saying what they thought that gift was and how they were going to choose that one.  Amazing how they tattled (or informed is a better word) on each other just to see the look on the face of their sibling when that present was made *off limites for early opening*.  It only took a couple Christmas’s before they learned to stop doing that to each other.

After we opened presents, we then ate brunch together.  Usually it was sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, biscuits and jelly.  Adults got coffee, kids got milk or hot chocolate.  Other times we made pancakes.  It was usually my sister, Cee, and myself that made brunch so the kids all were in charge of cleaning up afterward.  That included the cleaning up of all the boxes, wrapping paper, bows, etc.  After that, we could then relax before thinking about making Christmas day dinner.  The kids were usually out on the patio playing games or went over to friends homes to see what they managed to get for presents that year.  My youngest son had his own small tradition.  Every single Christmas as long as he lived at home, he went swimming in our pool on Christmas.  Now, remember, we lived in Florida so don’t shiver and shake.  However, I will tell you this…we had the COLDEST darn pool water unless it was a year when we had cut the mango tree back.  Otherwise, even when the sun was fully overhead, the pool didn’t get much sun.

As for why it was also a busy day….I got busy and boxed, taped, wrapped, labeled and under the tree today.  I mean ALL of the ones I had bought the other day.  I had enough boxes, tissue paper, bags, etc. and I set out to *get ‘er dun!*  The Beast got busy because we have only two more days before Buttmunch gets here and he wanted OUR bathroom to be spotless.  Since he is the one that is always taking baths, he’s taken to cleaning it.  I have no objection to that at all.  It’s also amazing how much *neater* he is when he uses the toilet since HE is doing the cleaning now.    He stripped down to his underwear to clean the tub (it’s one of those fiberglas units).  He swears that next time he’s going to CLR it before using the soft scrub because he thinks it’s difficult mainly because of mineral deposits that then get dirty on the walls of it.  He got really ambitious and decided to clean the blinds in our bedroom, too.  That was fun…..NOT!  What a maroon.  Just can’t tell that man anything.  It was nice enough for him to have done that outside and let the darn things drip on the deck, not our bedroom floor.  He did clean the windows after he took down the blinds and I decided to wash the curtains even though they didn’t look dirty at all.

Since I had to start washing things, I decided to wash what was laying around and in the hampers.  I also have some sheets that I am going to send to Bratfink for her rag rug that needed washing.  I decided I could get rid of the ones that Baron had chewed on and ruined when he was going through that phase as a pup.  I don’t want any more sheets or pillowcases that are chewed or mangled in any way.  I was really surprised when I started going through them.  I’m going to have to buy myself a few more sets of sheets.  Bratfink will be happy, though.  Lots of sheets to cut into strips for her rag rug  (or even rugs?).  Then I started taking all the leftover boxes and things and putting them into a large container so I could get rid of a few boxes and make it less crowded up in the attic later.

Now I can get my room straightened up with all the gifts accounted for and under the tree.  *Sigh*.  That’s one more thing out of the way now.  The Beast and I also decided that I am the one going up to Huntsville on Wednesday to pick up Buttmunch.  I want to stop at Publix on my way home to pick up some of our favorite breads and some lunchmeats.  And, as weird as this might sound, I want to see if they have the fuzzy slippers that they had last year THIS year.  They were really nice (I bought a couple pair as gifts and one for me) and only $10. a pair.  They had non-slip soles and were washable.  Like I said, nice…and would be nice stocking stuffers.

Well, love you all.  Time to get this posted and finish folding some clothes that just finished drying.  The Beast is heading for bed early since he didn’t get his usual 3 naps today once he got busy.  He even took Baron out for a run (and got chilled enough to regret it….LOL).   Hope you have a wonderful day and that all your shopping and wrapping is done or almost done.  Here’s a thought:  He who doesn’t have Christmas in his heart will not find it under the Christmas tree.
