TALES FROM THE BRAT FARM
I was disappointed today to find out that not one person commented on my query about my *unusual* Christmas tradition of always having a gift for the *unexpected stranger*. Maybe I should have just asked about any other unusual traditions that people have. That would be interesting, too. It’s up to you guys out there. Do YOU have any unusual Christmas traditions in your family? Perhaps one that is stranger or just a cute one? I don’t mean the milk and cookies out for Santa kind. Think about it and leave a comment.
In thinking back to my childhood, I remembered something that makes me think the practice might actually be something I adapted from my childhood, coupled with a feeling of empathy where I never wanted to see someone feel bad because there was nothing for them. Silly, perhaps. But that’s me. My mother always used to add an extra potato to the pot for *unexpected company* that might drop by right around dinner time. This was actually a smart thing for her because she was well known as a good cook. With a family as large as ours, there was normally enough food to go around for a crowd especially on Sunday when Mom’s special fried chicken was on the menu. It was amazing how often we had *unexpected* company.
There was no way in the world that Mom would have even considered turning someone away from joining our meal.
When my kids were younger, I always bought an extra game for that *unexpected* guest since it was likely to be one of their friends. If not, it was always one my kids didn’t have and I could just add it to their collection of games that they played with friends. It wasn’t until they got older that I changed the type of gift. I never wanted anyone to be there and not be able to feel welcomed and not able to participate if we were opening gifts.
We had the tradition that we all took turns opening up gifts, one-by-one. The youngest one that could read passed around the gifts, one to each person and then we took our turns. Those of us that lived in the household had to wait until the *expected* participants got there before they could open ANY gifts. Trust me, some Christmas’s my kids hated the waiting.
BUT…we also allowed them to open ONE gift on Christmas eve. They could select the gift to open and that was sometimes a real pain in the butt as they tried to decide which one to open. Once in a while, there were certain gifts that were set aside that could NOT be one of the chosen ones. The reasons for that differed and doesn’t matter now. Sometimes it was just because the kids were heard saying what they thought that gift was and how they were going to choose that one. Amazing how they tattled (or informed is a better word) on each other just to see the look on the face of their sibling when that present was made *off limites for early opening*. It only took a couple Christmas’s before they learned to stop doing that to each other.
After we opened presents, we then ate brunch together. Usually it was sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, biscuits and jelly. Adults got coffee, kids got milk or hot chocolate. Other times we made pancakes. It was usually my sister, Cee, and myself that made brunch so the kids all were in charge of cleaning up afterward. That included the cleaning up of all the boxes, wrapping paper, bows, etc. After that, we could then relax before thinking about making Christmas day dinner. The kids were usually out on the patio playing games or went over to friends homes to see what they managed to get for presents that year. My youngest son had his own small tradition. Every single Christmas as long as he lived at home, he went swimming in our pool on Christmas. Now, remember, we lived in Florida so don’t shiver and shake. However, I will tell you this…we had the COLDEST darn pool water unless it was a year when we had cut the mango tree back. Otherwise, even when the sun was fully overhead, the pool didn’t get much sun.
As for why it was also a busy day….I got busy and boxed, taped, wrapped, labeled and under the tree today. I mean ALL of the ones I had bought the other day. I had enough boxes, tissue paper, bags, etc. and I set out to *get ‘er dun!* The Beast got busy because we have only two more days before Buttmunch gets here and he wanted OUR bathroom to be spotless. Since he is the one that is always taking baths, he’s taken to cleaning it. I have no objection to that at all. It’s also amazing how much *neater* he is when he uses the toilet since HE is doing the cleaning now.
He stripped down to his underwear to clean the tub (it’s one of those fiberglas units). He swears that next time he’s going to CLR it before using the soft scrub because he thinks it’s difficult mainly because of mineral deposits that then get dirty on the walls of it. He got really ambitious and decided to clean the blinds in our bedroom, too. That was fun…..NOT! What a maroon. Just can’t tell that man anything. It was nice enough for him to have done that outside and let the darn things drip on the deck, not our bedroom floor. He did clean the windows after he took down the blinds and I decided to wash the curtains even though they didn’t look dirty at all.
Since I had to start washing things, I decided to wash what was laying around and in the hampers. I also have some sheets that I am going to send to Bratfink for her rag rug that needed washing. I decided I could get rid of the ones that Baron had chewed on and ruined when he was going through that phase as a pup. I don’t want any more sheets or pillowcases that are chewed or mangled in any way. I was really surprised when I started going through them. I’m going to have to buy myself a few more sets of sheets. Bratfink will be happy, though. Lots of sheets to cut into strips for her rag rug (or even rugs?). Then I started taking all the leftover boxes and things and putting them into a large container so I could get rid of a few boxes and make it less crowded up in the attic later.
Now I can get my room straightened up with all the gifts accounted for and under the tree. *Sigh*. That’s one more thing out of the way now. The Beast and I also decided that I am the one going up to Huntsville on Wednesday to pick up Buttmunch. I want to stop at Publix on my way home to pick up some of our favorite breads and some lunchmeats. And, as weird as this might sound, I want to see if they have the fuzzy slippers that they had last year THIS year. They were really nice (I bought a couple pair as gifts and one for me) and only $10. a pair. They had non-slip soles and were washable. Like I said, nice…and would be nice stocking stuffers.
Well, love you all. Time to get this posted and finish folding some clothes that just finished drying. The Beast is heading for bed early since he didn’t get his usual 3 naps today once he got busy. He even took Baron out for a run (and got chilled enough to regret it….LOL). Hope you have a wonderful day and that all your shopping and wrapping is done or almost done. Here’s a thought: He who doesn’t have Christmas in his heart will not find it under the Christmas tree.
